Wayne Smith denies Ireland link

Smith: 'I am categorically not in for the job'

New Zealand assistant coach Wayne Smith has rubbished reports linking him with the Ireland vacancy.

Smith is thought to be in the frame to replace Eddie O'Sullivan, who resigned earlier this month following his side's lacklustre Six Nations campaign.

But Smith has denied discussing the role with anyone from the Irish Rugby Football Union.

"I've never been contacted by anyone and nor have I contacted anyone. I am categorically not in for the job," he told The Sunday News.

"Steve Tew [New Zealand Rugby Union boss] mentioned it to me and it came as a bit of a shock to be rung and told in the first place.

"Someone has just manufactured a story."

But Tew has confirm that Smith and fellow assistant coach Steve Hansen have yet to sign contracts to take them through their next two-year term.

"We hope to have that all wrapped up very soon but they are totally committed," he said.

"We're not talking about terms or money or anything major, just some detail stuff which we want to sort out and that's underway."

Smith confirmed the new contract will be signed shortly.

"It's just been a housekeeping thing," he said.

"I haven't got around to it basically but were very amicable and on track - I am committed."
