Umaga one of 12 suspended

Troublemaker or peacekeeper? Umaga was banned for 10 days for his efforts

Toulon manager Tana Umaga joined a list of nine Pro D2 players to be suspended for fighting by the French Rugby Federation over the weekend while two other players were banned for three months for smoking cannabis.

The nine players, and former All Blacks captain Umaga, were handed down suspensions of varying lengths on Friday for their parts in two general punch-ups between Toulon and Pau and then Agen and Mont-de-Marsan.

Toulon's Mafiléo Kefu received the heaviest sanction - 60 days - for using his knee inappropriately.

Philip Fitzgerald and Saimone Taumoepeau, also from Toulon, will serve 30 day suspensions while their manager was given 10 days, starting from the day of the incident, which allowed him to join his team for their 37-14 victory away to Limoges.

Damien Costanzo (Pau) was suspended for 30 days for his part in the brawl which erupted at the end of the first-half.

Umaga took the unusual step of walking onto the pitch armed with water bottles in a bid to restore the peace but the match referee objected to his presence and asked him to leave.

Umaga told him where to get off and was shown a red card.

Agen's Jalil Narjissi, Arnaud Mignardi and Thomas Soucaze were suspended for 50, 30 and 20 days respectively for their part in a post-match fight which saw Mont-de-Marsan's Laurent Travini leave with a fractured eye socket and a participating spectator unconscious.

Travini, who started the fight, was suspended for 30 days while his team-mate Jocelino Suta was given a 20-day lay-off.

Meanwhile, Grenoble winner Benjamin Terchi and Lyon's Arnaud Mathet have admitted their guilt after testing positive for cannabis. Both players have been banned for three months.
