Blair delighted by nomination

Thrilled: Mike Blair

Scotland captain Mike Blair has expressed his delight at being nominated for the International Rugby Board Player of the Year award.

The scrum-half, 27, is one of three British stars, along with Wales duo Ryan Jones and Shane Williams, to feature on a five-strong list.

The winner of what is viewed as rugby union's most prestigious individual award will be announced in London on November 23.

Blair skippered Scotland to Calcutta Cup glory against England and a historic first victory in Argentina as well as helping Edinburgh achieve their highest ever finish in the Magners League of fourth.

"I'm really honoured to have been nominated," he said.

"I really enjoyed the season and there were three highlights that really stood out; Edinburgh's development, the win over England and the second Test victory in Argentina.

"I'm pleased to be put up for the award alongside such notable players.

"Hopefully, I can play well this season and experience more wins in Edinburgh and Scotland colours."

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden backed Blair's nomination, insisting the player deserves the recognition.

"This reflects that throughout last year Mike played at a consistently high level and fully deserves to be nominated for this prestigious award," said Hadden.

The other two contenders are New Zealand's imperious fly-half Dan Carter, who will begin a lucrative six-month contract with French club Perpignan in December, and Italy skipper Sergio Parisse.
