Homeward Bound: Victor Matfield will return to South Africa for a spot of lion hunting
South Africa star Victor Matfield is heading home from his sojourn in France after re-signing with the Bulls of Pretoria.
Matfield joined Toulon following his heroics for the Springboks at the World Cup but is said to have grown disillusioned with life in France's Pro D2 league, with the level of on-field violence reportedly being among the burly lock's bugbears.
He was allegedly offered a £325,000 ($640,000) contract by newly promoted Guinness Premiership club Northampton Saints, but has decided to return to his roots.
Matfield's deal with his former team - currently languishing in the nether regions of the Super 14 - is said to be about half that put on the table by Saints but will extend until the end of October 2011.
"I am really looking forward to seeing my friends again at the Bulls," said the 30-year-old.
"I really missed the rugby in South Africa a lot and to be able to join a team like the Bulls is an absolute honour.
"I know that I need to be in a structure like the Bulls to play myself back into contention for national honours and that make the challenge even greater.
"I know the Bulls are not having their best season but I have no doubt that they will be a force again soon."
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said he was delighted that Matfield had chosen to return to the reigning Super 14 champions.
"Victor has played most of his rugby here prior to his move to Toulon and he is rightfully returning home," he said.
"We are indeed lucky to be able to secure a player of his quality as he adds a lot of leadership and experience to our team.
"I only worked with him for the short period at the pre-season camp and was very impressed with his knowledge, work ethic and professionalism."
Matfield's decision to return to Pretoria will also increase his hopes of appearing for the Springboks when the British & Irish Lions tour his homeland next year - a series the lock has repeatedly indicated he would like to be involved in.
New Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has previously indicated his preference to choose his national team squads from players plying their trade in South Africa.
