Collins' black jersey under threat?

Blackadder's choice: Crusaders flanker Kieran Read

Former New Zealand captain Todd Blackadder says Crusaders flanker Kieran Read should replace Jerry Collins in the All Blacks line-up this season.

Read, the form number six among the five New Zealand Super 14 teams, has been one of the most consistent performers in the Crusaders pack and a contender for All Blacks selection.

All Blacks coach Graham Henry had intimated that he would base his selections on form rather than reputation, and if he remains true to that Read would start ahead of Collins according to Blackadder.

"I haven't seen Jerry Collins put together a performance that has bettered anything Kieran Read has done this year," Blackadder told The Press.

"Week-in, week-out, Read has been the best number six on the track."

However, Henry has long been a fan of Collins' ability to intimidate opponents with his defensive hits and Blackadder admitted the coach may want to stick with those he has relied on before.

"I suppose there is some loyalty there," said Blackadder.

"But the pressure is really on Jerry now isn't it?"

Collins did not play against the Cheetahs in Kimberley last weekend, having returned home with a rib injury, and won't be back to play the Lions in Wellington on Saturday either.

Another contender for the blindside spot is the Blues' Jerome Kaino, while Liam Messam (Chiefs) still needs time.

His team-mate Sione Lauaki can also play there, as can the Hurricanes' Chris Masoe.

Read has been an automatic selection for Robbie Deans this season, starting at number six jumper in the opener against the Brumbies after Reuben Thorne was sidelined because of injury.

Despite Thorne's recovery, Deans retained Read, who quickly adapted his game to the playing style required under the Experimental Law Variations.

If not wanted by Henry for three tests against Ireland and England and the Tri-Nations, Read should be a certainty for the grand slam tour at the end of the year, Blackadder said.
