Rush lifts Cardiff's blues

Boost: Rush will be back in action within six weeks

Cardiff Blues have been handed a major fitness boost with the news that Xavier Rush will not be out until the end of the year.

When Rush injured his knee in pre-season training it was feared he would be out until at least the end of the year, if not longer.

However the inspirational skipper is set to be back for Cardiff Blues' opening Heineken Cup fixture against Calvisano on October 11.

Rush had surgery on his knee to repair the torn cartilage and is expected to make a quick recovery.

"The operation went well and better than expected if I'm being honest," the former All Black told The Western Mail.

"They smoothed over some of the cartilage and cleaned out the knee.

"The surgeon, Rhys Williams, was very positive and I hope to be back earlier than expected, probably in late September or early October."
