Eagles swoop on Fourie

Former Cats and Boland Cavaliers fly-half Nel Fourie has signed to play for the SWD Eagles in next year's Absa Cup competition.

The highly-talented pivot will make a return to first-class rugby in South Africa after the Fidentia debacle at Wellington earlier this year. He was one of several stars whose contract was not renewed when Boland started to feel the sudden cash flow problem.

Fourie then announced that he would be hanging up his boots in order to go farming in America.

But later in the season he was back in Wellington looking for a job.

With Boland coach Deon Davids at that stage happy with the performances of Isma-eel Dollie at fly-half - and still with no new sponsor in sight - he had to go somewhere else.

Fourie is now as keen as ever to make his mark and his brilliant ability to dictate with the boot could come as a huge boost for the Eagles.

He will also automatically start as the number one No.10 as Danie de Beer has decided to continue his career abroad.

The Eagles have also signed former Border Bulldogs centre and captain Sinethemba Zweni, after the loss of Spencer Wakeling who has decided to play his rugby in the Italian league.

Up front the Eagles have lost seasoned flanker Nicky van der Walt, who has retired. Another loss comes in the form of hard-working lock Henry Grimes, who has decided to join the Falcons.

With the experienced Nico Luus calling it a day, Grimes could prove to be a huge acquisition for the Falcons.

The Boland Cavaliers were also keen to sign Grimes, but having failed to secure his signature - as well as that of Leopards lock Draad Linde - it means coach Deon Davids is still looking for a second row partner for Namibian World Cup star Nico Esterhuyse, who will be joining the Cavaliers in January.
