EDF Energy Reaction - Saturday

EDF Energy Reaction - Saturday

Solid effort: Robinson hauled down by Tindall

The opening weekend of EDF Energy Cup action saw several narrow results with Saturday's games also bringing about plenty of reaction - even before kick-off.

Wasps boss Ian McGeechan said there are "no issues" surrounding the withdrawal of Danny Cipriani from the 22 which faced Gloucester.

The Londoners went down 24-19 at Kingsholm with fly-half Cipriani around to witness the match after his first run-out on Wednesday against Bath in the Guinness Premiership in four months following an ankle injury.

He was named on the bench but pulled out before the game with McGeechan explaining that a tight turnaround was the reason.

"Danny is just sore. It's a three-day recovery and it was just too quick, which is why we decided not to have him on the bench today," he said.

"He has played his first game for months and, in the end, it was too quick to have him back.

"There is no problem - he's fit. It was just the timescale was too quick. There's certainly no problem."

Defeat does not help Wasps' chances of qualifying through their Pool but McGeechan was happy with the performances of his young players, particularly full-back Lachlan Mitchell.

"We played well to get the [losing] bonus point here and the forwards were outstanding today. There were a lot of players there playing in a competition like this for the first time and I thought they did well, particularly up front," he added.

Victorious Gloucester Head Coach Dean Ryan, meanwhile, was satisfied with his side's victory which puts them in prime position in Pool A of the competition.

They face Welsh region the Dragons later this month at home where a win will probably be enough to get them through to the knockout stages.

First, though, the Cherry and Whites enter the Heineken Cup next Saturday with an opening home tie against Biarritz.

"I am happy with that win. We lost in the last minute last year and it was almost set up for a repeat," Ryan said.

"When you play Wasps, you want the result. Performances are there week in and week out but if you have a ding-dong against Wasps, you are happy to come out on top.

"This gives us a chance to push some resources at this competition in the later games.

"We will look at this and think we let them back into the match but I'm pleased with the win."

Elsewhere, Bath boss Steve Meehan refused to blame his players for being too adventurous after losing 19-15 at home to Leicester in the EDF Energy Cup.

With their own Springbok fly-half Butch James rested, the Guinness Premiership leaders lost out to the tactical skills and goal-kicking of South African Derrick Hougaard who marked his debut with fourteen points.

"I would rather go down playing rugby rather than relying on kicking and penalties. The players' attitude was to attack and I'm not going to berate them for that," Meehan said.

"It's all about their development and maturity and learning to execute skills under pressure. We learnt a lot about our players today."

Meehan's attention is quickly turning to next weekend's opening fixtures in the Heineken Cup and their mouth-watering trip to Toulouse with the coach understandably excited.

"It will be a marvellous occasion. I don't know how many of them have experienced Toulouse - there will be drums, horns and trumpets and red and black everywhere. It's a great rugby town," he said.

"We are getting progressively better and better. Toulouse always give you an opportunity to play - we could end up with a cracking game."

Meanwhile, Tigers Head Coach Heyneke Meyer claimed he was under no illusion about how difficult it was to win at Bath and paid tribute to the contribution of Hougaard.

"It's great to have a guy who is used to playing tactically and we used our chances better in the game," he said.

"You need very good number ten in these competitions and Derrick is a good tactical player who can turn a game around.

"He will be one of the best players in the Premiership especially as he learns to play in different conditions. He's got a lot to offer."
