Regan: 'It's worth it'

Mark Regan and Jason Robinson

England hooker Mark Regan said that although it has led to him being in trouble with his club, Bristol, captaining the Barbarians in their 22-5 win over South Africa was worth it.

Regan defied the wishes of Bristol to face the Springboks - players from Guinness Premiership clubs were forbidden to play in the fixture - and is facing disciplinary action.

The England hooker revealed he would discover his fate on Monday when he sits down to speak to bosses at the Memorial Ground.

"It's always worth playing for Barbarians. They're a great side," Regan said after the game.

"I'll report for training at Bristol on Monday and no doubt we'll discuss what happens then. I'm fully fit and one of my objectives was to stay fit - and beat the world champions.

"I've played against South Africa five times already this year and this was the first time I've been on the winning side, so it was a case of fifth time lucky."

Regan's international future has been the source of speculation since the World Cup but the 35-year-old revealed he would be available for the Six Nations.

"It's not my decision if I play for England. The coaching staff will pick on merit and I wouldn't want it any other way," he said.

"If I'm needed, then I'm available."

The outspoken hooker also said that it had been an honour to lead England and Barbarians team-mate Jason Robinson in his final first-class appearance.

"It was a privilege to be Jason's captain. He's a class player and it was a fitting end to a great career."

Robinson, the most successful cross-code player of all time, made his 538th appearance with his 17-year professional career ending in fitting style on Saturday, as he helped the Barbarians beat the Springboks 22-5 at Twickenham.
