Team of the Week - Quarter-finals

Rodrigo Roncero: Still in the running for Player of the Tournament

Rodrigo Roncero: Still in the running for Player of the Tournament

With twelve teams gone, there are some 360 players who can no longer make it into this side, and are thus already out of the running for our Player of the Tournament title too.

Rodrigo Roncero is still in line for that award, having made Team of the Week three times, and should he make it into the Team of the Week for the semi-finals he will have guaranteed himself at least a share of the Tournament crown.

However, a large number of this week's nominees have collected their second appearance in a Team of the Week, not leat England's prize duo of Andrew Sheridan and Jonny Wilkinson, and Roncero's front-row mate Mario Ledesma, meaning they are only one appearance behind Roncero with potentially two more matches to go.

But if there are any differences between your calls and ours for either this week's or Player of the Tournament awards, please let us know!

Team of the Week - Quarter-finals

15 Damien Traille -
A long, long time since Traille played full-back, but Bernard Laporte's game-plan did play to Traille's strengths: catch it, kick it a long way away. Thus was Traille faultless in execution, and he then found time to pop up in a fly-half role and set the winning try in motion.

14 Vilimoni Delasau - Leave aside the high tackles, Delasau delivered a faultless performance of wing play, breaking tackles, coming off his wing for work up the middle, and finding time and space to score a superb chip and chase try. Unlucky not to get in the team last week, unlucky not to be unanimous this week.

13 Stirling Mortlock - A fine performance in adversity from Australia's captain, who looked the only one capable of breaking England's white wall for most of the game. He may be remembered only for missing the final kick at goal, which would be a cruel negation of a terrific display of running and tackling.

12 Luke McAlister - Again, he may be remembered for all the wrong reasons, but most of the clean New Zealand breaks in the backs were of McAlister's making, and again, had he landed that last-gasp drop goal, everything else might have been forgotten. But he was a real source of creativity when a lot of his backline mates were not quite at the party.

11 Cédric Heymans - Did superbly well to keep Joe Rokocoko largely shackled and made some telling surges on a weekend where back play was often at a premium. Also a useful ally to Damien Traille at full-back.

10 Jonny Wilkinson - The helmsman who has taken over England's rudderless ship and is steering it a faultless course through heavier and heavier seas. Yes, his forwards provide him a stage on which to perform, but no, that doesn't detract from a gob-smacking performance.

9 Mosese Rauluni - With Nicky Little gone and Seremaia Bai filling in, Fiji needed another source of creativity, and it came from the base of the scrum. Exposed South Africa a number of times around the fringes and a magnificent break set up Sereli Bobo's try to level the scores in the second half.

8 Gonzalo Longo - Two weeks in a row for Argentina's number eight, whose tackling and running were tireless on a night where his team-mates began to wither.

7 Thierry Dusautoir - When a team makes nearly five times as many tackles as the opposition and still wins, the openside is often the hero. Dusautour was all that, and scored a try! It takes something to outshine Richie McCaw when the pressure is on.

6 Juan Smith - Head and shoulders above his team-mates for much of this tournament, Smith was the one to perform for South Africa when it counted in the final twenty minutes against Fiji, who just could not cope with his speed.

5 Ali Williams - New Zealand were superior in many facets of their game against France, but the most glaring was the line-out, where Williams was a constant thorn in French jumpers' sides. Another forward to pop up and grab himself a try ... nearly anyway.

4 Simon Shaw - Like Williams, Shaw made mincemeat of Australia's line-out, and in the tight phases where England kept the ball, Shaw was the one keeping it tightest of all.

3 Pieter de Villiers - It takes something to out-scrum Tony Woodcock, but De Villiers held France's scrum steady despite every vain attempt by New Zealand's behemoth to get it going backwards, and even had Woodcock going backward on occasion.

2 Mario Ledesma - Another evergreen display from the 34-year-old, who just doesn't stop running around. Or talking.

1 Andrew Sheridan - A unanimous vote from the panel, which doesn't happen often. Wilkinson took the stage to strut his stuff, but underneath, Sheridan was holding it up.
